Your toothbrush sheds plastic. Here's why that matters.

In a 2025 lab test, every toothbrush tested shed microplastics. Below is what researchers have linked them to, and the brush we made with no plastic bristles to shed.

What it's linked to once it's inside you.

Microplastics don't just pass through. Researchers keep finding them in human blood, arteries and brains. Here is what the studies link them to.

Your heart

257 patients, followed for almost 3 years after artery surgery. Heart attack, stroke or death:

Plastic found in their artery plaque20%
No plastic found7.5%
New England Journal of Medicine, 2024
  • Your cells

In water, common plastics made free radicals. In the lab they misfolded proteins and broke mouse red blood cells into fragments.

    Nature, 2026
  • Your fertility

In 113 men, every extra type of microplastic found was linked to a lower sperm count, concentration and motility.

    eBioMedicine, 2024
  • Your gut

People with inflammatory bowel disease had more microplastics in their stool.

    Environmental Science & Technology, 2022
  • Your brain

A 2025 study found more plastic in the brains of people who had dementia. The researchers say it doesn't prove the plastic caused it.

    Nature Medicine, 2025

Most of this research shows links, not proof. Which is exactly why we'd rather not scrub plastic against our gums twice a day.

You can't avoid most microplastics. The ones you scrub against your gums twice a day, you can.
